RACE DAY!

Ready for the blocks? Ready to push for that next touch?

Race day is where all those hours of training come together. Whether it's your first swimming gala or you're chasing a new personal best, being prepared helps you focus on what matters most... your swim.

At Chase the Wall, we understand the excitement, nerves and last-minute kit checks that come with competitive swimming. We're here to help swimmers and their families feel ready for every race.

Your Race Day Checklist

The last thing you want is to arrive poolside and realise you've forgotten something. Use our checklist before you leave home.

The Essentials

  • [ ] Competition swimwear
  • [ ] Club kit and spare swimwear
  • [ ] Racing goggles
  • [ ] Spare goggles, just in case
  • [ ] Competition swim cap
  • [ ] Spare swim cap

For Between Races

  • [ ] Large towel
  • [ ] Warm clothes or a hoodie
  • [ ] Flip-flops or poolside footwear
  • [ ] Water bottle
  • [ ] Suitable snacks for the day
  • [ ] A book, headphones or something to keep you occupied between events

Before You Leave

  • [ ] Check the gala programme and arrival time
  • [ ] Check the venue's rules about food, drinks and poolside equipment
  • [ ] Pack your bag the night before
  • [ ] Make sure your swimmer knows which events they're swimming
  • [ ] Allow plenty of time to arrive, get changed and settle in

Top tip: Pack the night before and keep spare goggles and a spare cap in your swim bag. It is much easier to deal with a broken strap at home than five minutes before a race!

Choosing Your Race Day Kit

The right kit can help you feel comfortable, confident and ready to compete.

Racing Goggles

A secure, comfortable fit is essential. Try your goggles before race day to check the seal, strap and visibility. If you use a different pair for racing, make sure you've tested them in training first.

Competition Swim Caps

A well-fitting cap helps keep your hair out of the way and can help your goggles sit securely. Check your club or competition rules before choosing a cap for an event.

Swim Bags & Accessories

Keep your essentials organised so you can find them quickly between races. A dedicated swim bag, spare cap and goggles can make race-day preparation much easier.

Your First Swimming Gala?

Your first gala can feel like a big occasion, especially for younger swimmers and their families. There may be unfamiliar routines, lots of waiting around and plenty of excitement.

A few things to remember:

  • Arrive with enough time to follow the organiser's instructions.
  • Listen carefully for event and heat announcements.
  • Encourage your swimmer to focus on their own race and progress.
  • Remember that waiting between events is normal — bring warm layers and something to do.
  • Celebrate effort, learning and personal progress, not just medals or finishing positions.

Every swimmer starts somewhere. Confidence grows with experience, and every gala is an opportunity to learn.

Focus on Your Next Touch
